2014 Trip - Day 6 - October 8

We had a light breakfast at Croissant D'or -- a couple of raspberry croissants and we split a coke - 8.00. After breakfast we headed out to Jefferson Highway to hit a couple of thrift stores (Salvation Army and Red, White, and Blue). At Red, White and Blue, I made an error in what I thought was on sale and spent a little more than I meant to..oh, well...that's how it goes sometimes.

On the way back in to the French Quarter, we first stopped at Haydel's for a Cajun Kringle. After that brief stop, we headed to Crabby Jack's to get one of my favorite po boys, Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp Remoulade. We split a 12" and with a couple of drinks our tab was 18.00.

We got a surprise when we got back to the apartment, even though the Cajun Kringle was in the same size box, the width of the kringle was about 1/2 what it used to be, but it is still mighty tasty.

Walked to Armstrong Park to see John Cleary, but either we couldn't find where the concert was happening OR we got there at intermission. Will try again next Wednesday for the same event. We decided to grab a quick bite and go see The Tin Men at DBA. Went by Coops and it was jam packed, so headed on over to DBA for the show. After watching their first set, we were hungry and went back by Coops and they had a line out the door, so, we decided to go to Acme, where we found another terrible line....WTF..it's Wednesday and there aren't a lot of people here....but they all want to eat where we want to eat.

We walked on down to Decatur street to Felipe's Taqueria for a couple of tacos and back at the apartment we had some Kringle for dessert.

2012 Trip - Day 8 - October 10

We started the day by going way the hell out somewhere to get gas and a few supplies at Wally World. Then we swung back by Haydel's and picked up four almond croissants and a couple of cookies, the cost for all of this was $13.00. After leaving Haydel's we wanted to get to Casamento's early and we made it to Magazine Street around 11:20 about 10 minutes before the lunch crowd arrived.

Peggy had a bowl of oyster stew. As you can see in the below photo, they like butter at Casamento's

I had a cup of gumbo and a 1/2 an oyster loaf. Our tab at Casamento's was $27.00

After an afternoon nap for me, we walked to Lafayette Square for the Wednesday Music On The Square where we heard Colin Lake. We also ate our supper there. We had Ya-Ka-Mein (a mixture of noodles, beef, onions, and boiled egg in a spicy sauce) from Ms Linda The Ya-Ka-Mein Lady. Peggy claims this is the best thing she'd ever had at Lafayette Square and can't wait to get more next week.

We also tried BBQ pulled pork over roasted corn grits from Squeal BBQ. The pulled pork was good, but the roasted corn grits needed a little more salt or some type of seasoning.

We also had a white and dark chocolate brownie parfait from Cafe Adelaide, which was not quite as good as it sounds. With a couple of Barq's, our supper on the square cost us $20.00. After walking back to the apartment and taking at brief rest, we went to d.b.a. to see The Tin Men - Washboard Chaz, Matt Perrine and Alex McMurray. They like to say they are New Orleans premiere washboard, sousaphone, guitar band.

To mar a near perfect day in New Orleans, I fell on the sidewalk when we left d.b.a. and sprained my right ankle. Thus the reason this entry is a day late.

2009 Trip Day 16 - May 28

We went out Jefferson Highway for 2 reasons. One to hit a couple of thrift stores, the other to get to Haydel's Bakery.

The Salvation Army Thrift was clean and pretty good, although we didn't get much there. There was too much good stuff and it made "shopping" overwhelming. The Red White and Blue Thrift was huge and noisy, we got nothing at this one.

Stopped by Haydel's and got 2 almond croissants and a Cajun Kringle.

Then it was time for lunch. We swung by River Shack and they looked packed, we drove by Crabby Jack's and their parking lot was full. So we just drove on back into town and went over to The Joint. We had 2 BBQ sandwiches with slaw, sides of baked mac and cheese and potato salad and 2 drinks - 18.00.

It has turned H-O-T today and we hid out in the apartment during the afternoon, waiting for things to cool down.

We left out about 7 and went to Acme for charbroiled oysters, with 2 drinks - 23.00. We got sat at a double two top with a couple from Virginia. They were our age and this was their first visit to New Orleans. They came because it was their anniversary and New Orleans was on the husband's "bucket list". They were nice dining companions.

Desserts were the almond croissants from Haydels:
